"Slumber Party Panic" is the first episode in the first season of Adventure Time. It's the first episode overall.

Synopsis[]

Finn and Princess Bubblegum must protect the Candy Kingdom from a horde of candy zombies they accidentally created without the citizens of the Candy Kingdom finding out.

Plot[]

In the woods outside the Candy Kingdom, Jake and Lady Rainicorn are playing in the forest while Finn and Princess Bubblegum are in the Graveyard doing a science experiment aimed to bring the dead Candy People back to life. She explains that if her decorpsinator serum works, the dead of the Candy Kingdom will arise looking as young and healthy as Finn. She tests the first batch of the formula on the dead Mr. Cream Puff. The serum appears to be working and Finn is excited while Bubblegum suspects something’s wrong. Cream Puff jumps into the grand beaker containing the rest of the serum and it spills all over the other graves of the dead Candy People. The dead candy people arise, and Princess Bubblegum tells Finn that they’re not coming back to life and are still dead, concluding that her incomplete decorpsinator serum has created Candy Zombies. This situation is dire because their attraction to sugar will draw them straight to the Candy Kingdom along with the rest of the Candy People, so the two of them race back to the Kingdom to make preparations.

Back at the kingdom, Princess Bubblegum evacuates all of the Candy People to the main candy foyer. Jake and Lady Rainicorn hear the summons and head over to see what's up. In the great hall when all the Candy People are present and accounted for, she announces that they are all going to have a slumber party, much to Finn's confusion. In private, she explains to Finn that the Slumber Party is a distraction to keep the Candy People from finding out about the zombies, ominously stating that if the Candy People knew, they'd "flip out". The scene then instantly cuts back to the cemetery where Starchie searches for Princess Bubblegum, having brought her a bigger corpse shovel. When a candy zombie emerges from the mausoleum right behind him, Bubblegum's point is made painfully clear when he screams in terror and then just spontaneously combusts where he stands in front of the zombie. That's when Bubblegum finishes explaining it all to Finn: Candy People explode when they're frightened, which means just so much as knowing about the existence of a massive horde of undead cannibalistic corporeal revenants approaching the Candy Kingdom as they speak will cause a kingdom-wide massacre. Determined to protect her beloved Candy citizens, Bubblegum makes Finn royal promise not to let anyone find out about the candy zombies under any circumstance, then gives him orders to keep the people distracted and happy while she tries to finish the serum in her lab, which is the only thing that will end this nightmare. As she leaves, Finn asks if he can at least tell Jake, but he walks in with curiosity about whatever they were talking about. When Finn just barely manages to keep the secret of the Candy Zombies from slipping, his efforts to not act suspicious just make Jake more suspicious that the two of them are up to something mischevious, like a prank he hopes to get in on. In an attempt to keep the promise, Finn avoids answering Jake and tries playing Truth Or Dare, where Chocoberry dares Mr. Cupcake to take off his wrapper. Jake says bros are supposed to be honest with each other and breaks the ice by asking if everything is alright. He states that everything's fine, albeit in the awkward presence of Mr. Cupcake without his wrapper (revealing that he's chocolate), who then asks Jake whether he prefers chocolate or fudge. Jake says he can't eat either because as a dog, either would probably be lethal to him. But he says if he had to choose, he would choose neither fudge nor chocolate. Finally, Jake dares Finn to tell the truth about what's going on with him and Princess Bubblegum. Finn tries to dodge Jake's question by starting a game of Dodge Socks, but when he throws his sock, Jake is too smart to fall for it. Worse yet, Finn only succeeds in getting closer to exposing the secret of the zombies when Jake smells Mr. Cream Puff's scent on Finn's sock (because Finn kicked the zombie Mr. Cream Puff when he attacked Princess Bubblegum earlier). To make matters worse, Finn sees out the window that the Zombies have arrived at the Kingdom and are only minutes away from reaching the grand foyer. At first, Finn's only solution is hopelessly blathering about the hypothetical possibility of him having to keep a secret for the Princess, but since that doesn't get him anywhere, his only other idea is getting Jake to play Seven Minutes in Heaven with Lady Rainicorn. He stuffs the two of them in the closet with Jake making himself painfully clear that Finn has 7 minutes to figure out a solution. The zombies have finally reached the grand foyer and the sound of them knocking on the door starts scaring the still ignorant Candy People. Finn just narrowly avoids Chet exploding out of fright by drowning out the zombies' noises with loud music. When he sees zombies finding ways inside, he starts barricading all the exits and windows. Finn gets the Candy People to help him keep the zombies out of the castle by turning it into a game called Blockado, "the game of barricades." Knowing the blockades will not last long, Finn gets another idea when he takes a look at Manfried the talking piñata. He tells the Candy People that they're gonna smash piñatas (not Manfried) and blindfolds them with taffy so they do not see that the piñatas are really zombies breaking into the castle. When the zombies finally break in and surround the Candy People, Finn arms them with sticks and gives the order to smash some pinatas. The Candy People obliviously smash all the Candy Zombies while Finn mercilessly pummels them left and right. When Candy People succeed in slaying the zombies, they start eating the candy that was stashed in them and by the their threat is finally nuetralized, Jake and Lady Rainicorn come out of the closet and see all the carnage. When Finn tells him everything that just happened, especially regarding the existence of the Candy Zombies, time suddenly stops. The only people who aren't frozen are Finn and Princess Bubblegum, who hasn't finished her equation yet. Princess Bubblegum reasons this can only mean Finn broke the royal promise he swore to at the start of this mission. At first, Finn doesn't understand the gravity of what he just did because all the zombies have been slain and the Candy People are no longer in any sort of danger. Bubblegum explains that a royal promise is an unbreakable pact that cannot ever be violated under any circumstances, even if the condition of the promise is no longer valid. Suddenly, once again, Princess Bubblegum's point is made painfully clear when two Guardians of the Royal Promise arrive and grab Finn and Bubblegum. For breaking his royal promise, the guardians plan to punish Finn with a trial by fire. However, since Bubblegum cares for Finn, they decide to make him solve math questions instead. Finn is terrible at math, and at first, he is given a complicated math problem, but luckily one of the Guardians changes it to 2+2. Finn just barely answers correctly and the Guardians reset time. As Finn gloats about his success in defeating the broken royal promise, he makes Bubblegum realize that 4 is the last figure she needs to perfect her decorpsinator serum, as she was too smart to see such a simple answer. With the serum finally perfected, Finn and Bubblegum bring the zombies back to life and restoring them to full health just like she intended to from the start, including Starchie, and the Candy People reunite with their former dead relatives. Jake tells Finn that he should have just told him that he had made a royal promise to not tell about the zombies since Jake knows "what's up." Finn promises Bubblegum to keep his promises from now on, and Starchie (despite not being a zombie anymore), craves for flesh and gnaws on Finn's leg. Finn squeezes him, and Starchie ends the episode with a fart.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first time Finn uses a catch-phrase.
  • This is the first time Lady Rainicorn speaks Korean, instead of the bird language she used in the animated short.
  • Princess Bubblegum's laboratory has a miniature version of one of the Gumball Guardians.
  • A zombie Finn can be seen in this episode. It is not mentioned by any of the characters and is not part of the plot.
  • When Jake and Lady Rainicorn's time in "7 Minutes in Heaven" are up, Jake comes out eating what looks like a jelly doughnut.
  • Candy people exploding from fear is inconsistently referenced in later episodes. In some major panics like in "The Comet" the candy people do not explode, but in "Something Big," Crunchy is shown to explode out of fear. It could be that Princess Bubblegum has largely solved this problem for the candy people, e.g. via calming exercises such as the one shown in "Hot Diggity Doom."
  • This is Finn's first appearance after being renamed from "Pen."

Episode connections[]

Cultural references[]

  • When the first candy zombie tries to bite Princess Bubblegum, it says "Gimme some sugar, baby," quoting Bruce Campbell's character, Ash Williams, from Army of Darkness.
  • When Finn says, "Blockado, The Game of Barricades," this imitates common marketing slogans for classic board games (for example, "Risk, The Game of Global Domination").
  • The games "Truth or Dare" and "Seven Minutes in Heaven" are party games still being played today.

Production notes[]

  • This episode, along with "Trouble in Lumpy Space," aired as the series' official premiere.
  • In its original broadcast on April 5, 2010, the episode was watched by 2.497 million viewers.[1]
  • The episode was originally titled "The Royal Promise" and later "Slumber Party Slaughter."[2]

Errors[]

  • Starchy had exploded in the graveyard, but in the scene after Finn suggests playing "Blockado," Starchy could be seen with all of the other Candy People. However, this could just be a graphic description of what would happen should candy people suffer extreme fear.
  • When Jake was surprised and the castle became blue, Peppermint Butler is seen without his white color in his tuxedo.
  • In the scene where the candy people are entering the castle, if you look closely, you can see Mr. Cupcake's wrapper is brown before the Truth or Dare part comes along.
  • When Jake runs out of the closet, the jelly doughnut becomes duplicated. One stays stuck the door while Jake holds the other.
  • After all the Candy Zombies are defeated, Chet is entirely orange, Candy Cane Guy with no blindfold, Mr. Cupcake with no arms.
